What's the best way to visit alaska - by cruise or by air.

By cruise and do it in July or August

I prefer going there by cruise. It is wonderful. I especially like doing the inner passage cruise, and the ones that take you to a port each day and provide a tour at each. They will teach you about each port and you get to see a lot of Alaska during the 14 or 7 day cruise, it is wonderful. Plus, your accomodations are all taken care of, as is your food. You can enjoy the port while you are there, then you get back on the boat and enjoy a nice relaxing evening.



I especially think cruising is the way to go if it is your first visit to the area. I like to cruise to a destination first to learn about it and see what it is like. This way I can see if I like it, learn a little bit about it and if I want I can go back without a cruise and enjoy myself that way. Then you know a little more about the area, what to expect, how to plan, etc. It is a great way to educate yourself before you go.

Book a cruise-tour. You take a cruise through the inside passage and when you get off the ship you may stay overnight in Anchorage and then take the train to Fairbanks, AK , with (if you want .. I do recommend doing this) a stop at Denali National Park for a night or two. Then on to Fairbanks by train or bus the next day. The train ride is fabulous, especially the parts from Anchorage to Denali.



Also consider, by looking at the options offered by the cruise lines, flying to Fairbanks and doing the tour part first. Then board the ship for the cruise back to Seattle or Vancouver, Canada.



The Princess cruise lines does lots of cruise tours and so does Royal Carribean. Holland America lines also does cruises. I recommend Princess and RC.

only by word of mouth, since i've never been there. but by cruise seems to be the better choice.
